I actually arrived in Shanghai a day early to make a few preparations (such as looking for a good driver, etc.). Since it was raining, I played the $1 umbrella lottery; it broke before I got half a mile from the hotel. (I have one at home which has lasted several months now, you just never can tell.)
Aside from ducking into buildings to avoid the worst torrents of rain, I also took to the subway tunnels/stations whenever possible, and ran across this interesting location below People's Square:
And that's all I have to say about the first day. Don't worry, it gets more interesting.
