Xiamen (·Hªù)

I just have a few random pictures from Xiamen taken over the few days we were there.

Our visit coincided with a culture festival in honor of Zheng Chenggong / Coxinga (among other related events). Here they are packing up props used in the opening ceremony on Xiamen's Gulangyu Island, where there's a museum dedicated to him, and of course the argument that because he liberated Taiwan centuries ago, the island belongs to China now.

Here's a closeup of his statue:

We also finally got a name chop for Charles' daughter, after promising to do so several trips ago. Here's mister "I've carved 100,000 of these in my life!" finishing up the job.

There's no way he's actually carved that many, but he certainly showed a fair amount of skill given the speed at which he was able to backwards-carve a few characters I threw at him on the spot. The name's Ma Liya (°¨²ú¶®)--fairly generic (actually also a common transliteration for Maria), but it matches the last name Mann and first name Amelia rather closely.
